Poliovirus Surveillance: AFP, Environmental, PID, and Laboratory Guidance — Complete Collection (2023–2026)

This collection consolidates eight GPEI documents covering all dimensions of poliovirus surveillance — from AFP case detection to environmental monitoring, laboratory sequencing, immunodeficient patient surveillance, and outbreak intensification. Together they form the operational backbone of global poliovirus surveillance systems.

AFP Surveillance Guidance (1st Ed. 2024 & 2nd Ed. Pre-pub 2026). The flagship WHO technical manuals for Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance: case definitions, specimen collection standards, data management, and performance indicators. The 2026 pre-publication edition incorporates lessons from recent eradication progress and updated virological procedures.

Global Polio Surveillance Action Plan 2025–2026. A strategic framework defining surveillance priorities, measurable targets, and accountability mechanisms for all GPEI partners. Available in French.

Environmental Surveillance Field Guidance. Protocols for wastewater sampling sites, sample collection and cold-chain transport, laboratory processing, and data reporting for environmental poliovirus detection.

Strengthening Surveillance During Outbreaks (2026). Emergency guidance on intensifying AFP and environmental surveillance when poliovirus circulates, covering response triggers, coordination, and escalation steps.

GPLN Sequencing Laboratory Onboarding — Guidance Paper 10 (2025). Technical requirements for laboratories joining the Global Polio Laboratory Network's genomic sequencing programme, including accreditation pathways and reporting formats.

PID Patient Surveillance Guidelines (EN/FR/ES). Protocols for detecting poliovirus in patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders, who may shed live virus for extended periods without paralysis.

WHO Weekly Epidemiological Record No. 23 (2025). SAGE conclusions on polio vaccines and revised surveillance strategies adopted in March 2025.

Who should read this: Surveillance officers, field epidemiologists, laboratory staff, national program managers, WHO regional and country offices

Document value: Complete operational reference for all poliovirus surveillance modalities — routine AFP, environmental sampling, outbreak intensification, lab network management, and immunodeficient patient monitoring

The Polio Toolkit is a web-based hub managed by UNICEF Digital Community Engagement (DCE) Unit as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). It brings together evidence-driven social and behaviour change (SBC) learning resources, strategies, and tools to address misinformation, strengthen vaccine confidence, and support effective community engagement across polio-endemic and outbreak contexts.
