Polio Eradication Strategy 2022–2026: Executive Summary

This 16-page WHO publication is the concise executive summary of the Polio Eradication Strategy 2022–2026, produced on behalf of the GPEI. Designed for senior decision-makers, it presents the core goals, rationale, and key operational priorities of the full strategy in an accessible format. Available in English, Arabic, Russian, and Spanish.

The summary frames the current challenge: WPV1 remains endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, while cVDPV2 outbreaks are expanding across multiple regions. It articulates why eradication remains both urgent and achievable, drawing on three decades of programmatic experience, advances in vaccine technology including nOPV2, and strengthened epidemiological surveillance.

The core content presents the two strategic goals: Goal One — permanently interrupting all poliovirus transmission through high-quality SIAs, strengthened AFP and environmental surveillance, and robust outbreak response; Goal Two — the sustainability agenda, including polio transition planning, routine immunization integration, poliovirus containment under GAP-IV, and dual financial planning. The document emphasizes reaching every child in hard-to-access communities and in cVDPV2-affected areas.

This executive summary is the essential briefing document for heads of state participating in GPEI advocacy events, board members of GPEI partner organizations, donor country representatives, and senior UN officials. It also serves as a quick reference for media and civil society representatives. By translating a complex multi-year strategy into an accessible format, it enables high-level political commitment and resource mobilization at the global level.

Who should read this: Heads of state, government ministers, GPEI board members, donor delegates, senior UN officials, global health advocates, communications officers, civil society representatives.

Document value: Enables high-level political commitment and donor mobilization by presenting the essential logic of the GPEI 2022–2026 strategy in a concise, accessible format.
