Championing Change: Local Leaders Spearhead Vital Polio Vaccination Campaign in Guinea

Moussa is a 25-year-old man from a polygamous family with three siblings. Originally from Siguiri, he is single without children and holds a degree in International Relations from IMAT University, fluent in both English and French.

The ‘Godparents for Vaccination’ initiative, supported by influential individuals from the Siguiri department and funded by UNICEF Guinea, arrives at an opportune moment for this ambitious young man. This initiative exemplifies how community members can actively support vaccination efforts. These influencers traverse their communities to encourage and foster the adoption of vaccination activities for children.

The 'Godparents for Vaccination' Initiative

As a young graduate in international relations, Moussa shared his reasons for joining this initiative, depicting a challenging situation in his community.

“When I was little, several of my cousins died from diseases simply because they were not vaccinated," he said with a somber expression, and added, "today, my community is among those with the lowest vaccination coverage, with children paralyzed for life due to Polio. I want the children in my community to be better protected, which is why I go there to convince the skeptics to vaccinate their children and to encourage the vaccination teams to reach everyone.”

At the end of our interview, when asked if he had a special message for his community, he solemnly stated,

“Dear parents, vaccination is a safe, effective, and free way to protect children against many diseases, especially Polio! Take advantage of the Polio vaccination campaign running from May 10 to 13, 2024, to protect your children against this terrible disease. Please ensure your children are vaccinated at every opportunity so they can grow up healthy and well-protected!”
